Benefits of Soy Blend Candles vs Paraffin Candles

What’s so great about soy blend candles? Why are they different than the regular candles (paraffin) you find in stores? I mean, paraffin candles are cheaper and some even smell just about as good. Are there real benefits of soy blend candles?

You bet there are! Using soy wax blend candles is a great way to help our environment and our farmers! Unlike paraffin wax, natural soy wax blend comes from right here in the USA from our own soybean farmers.

So in addition to using a completely natural soy wax blend that is safer for you, is a renewable, sustainable resource, and gives us a little less dependence on crude oil, it also helps our own US economy by helping our farmers.

You’ll also find that soy blend candles burn up to twice as long as paraffin candles. For example, our soy blend tea lights burn from 7-8 hours! Compare that to a normal paraffin tea-light that only burns for 4 hours at most (believe me, We’ve tested!). This is because soy wax blend has a much lower melting point and in turn, burns cooler than paraffin wax.

So even though soy blend candles might be more expensive, they burn up to twice as long as regular candles so it actually evens out and you really aren’t spending much more for a better quality candle.

With soy blend candles, you will also get little to no soot when burned properly and soy wax blend is much easier to clean up if spilled! Just take a little soap and water and possibly a hair dryer and- Whala! No more hard, dried paraffin wax that may take scissors to cut it out of the carpet! (We can't guarantee the dye won’t stain if there is dye in the candle)

There are other kinds of natural candles too that are great for our environment. Soy wax blend candles are the least expensive among the natural wax candles, but there’s Beeswax candles and Palm Wax candles that we’ve heard great things about also, as well as mixing these waxes with soy!

So when it comes to soy blend candles vs regular candles? We’ll take the soy blend please..

About Candle Wicks

A candle wick is usually a braided cotton that holds the flame of a candle or oil lamp for a set period of time depending upon the amount of wick. A candle wick works by capillary action, conveying ("wicking") the fuel to the flame. When the liquid fuel, typically melted candle wax, reaches the flame it then vaporizes and burns. The candle wick influences how the candle burns. Important characteristics of the wick include diameter, stiffness, fire-resistance, and tethering.

Candle wicks are normally made out of braided cotton. Wicks are sometimes braided flat, so that as they burn they also curl back into the flame, thus making them self-consuming. Prior to the introduction of these wicks special scissors were used to trim the excess wick without extinguishing the flame.

Large diameter wicks typically result in a larger flame, a larger pool of melted wax, and the candle burning faster.

In tea-lights the wick is tethered to a piece of metal to stop it from floating to the top of the molten wax and burning before the wax does. Candles designed to float in water require not only a tether for the wick, but also a seal on the bottom of the candle to prevent the wick from wicking water and extinguishing the flame.

Virtually all wicks are treated with various flame-resistant solutions in a process known as mordanting. Without mordanting the wick would be destroyed by the flames and the flow of melted wax to the flame would cease. Beyond that, wicks can be treated with substances to improve the color and brightness of the flame, provide better rigidity to keep the wick out of the melted wax, and improve the flow of that wax up the wick.

There are many variables that factor into matching a candle with the proper wick such as wax type, fragrance load, dye type, container diameter, etc... Our wicks are carefully selected to give the best performance based on all these factors.

Thanks for a great year in 2016. Now in 2017 watch for new scents, glassware and additional items as we grow.
